The center-right Christian Democratic Union re-elected conservative opposition leader Friedrich Merz for another two-year term as party chairman, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.
Sixty-eight-year-old Merz received almost 90 percent of the vote at the CDU's national party congress in Berlin. The politician expressed gratitude for this "great vote of confidence". "I look forward to the work ahead of us over the next two years," said Mertz.
He previously promised to bring the CDU and its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union, back to power in the next parliamentary elections in 2025.
In his speech to party delegates today, Merz criticized Chancellor Olaf Scholz's left-wing coalition government and said the country could not afford another term under the Social Democrat.
