Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, who died on Monday in a helicopter crash, will be buried today in his native his city of Mashhad after two days of mourning ceremonies attended by hundreds of thousands of people, AFP reported, quoted by BTA.
The president, who is an ayatollah, will be buried in the main Shiite mausoleum in the northeastern part of the country - that of Imam Reza.
Raisi, who was Iran's president from 2021, died at the age of 63 after attending the joint opening of a dam with his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev on their shared border.
Photos published in Iranian media show workers in Mashhad preparing the holy city for the final day of the president's funeral. Giant portraits of Raisi, black flags and Shia symbols were erected in the streets of Iran's second city, especially around Reza's shrine.
A day earlier in Tehran, huge crowds gathered in the city center to pay their last respects to the president, who after his death was celebrated as a "martyr".
