Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fizo, who suffered serious injuries in the recent assassination attempt, will not be transferred to another hospital, the medical team caring for him announced, DPA and BTA reported.
Miriam Lapunikova, head of hospital "Roosevelt” in Banska Bistrica, told journalists today that Fico wishes to be transferred to home treatment as soon as his condition allows.
However, Lapunikova could not estimate how much time will pass until then.
The left-wing populist prime minister was seriously wounded by several gunshots on May 15 as he joined supporters after a government meeting in the small town of Handlova.
The attacker, who was immediately arrested, is in police custody. During police questioning, the 71-year-old man cited his contempt for Fico and government policy as a justification for his actions.
This is clear from a document that the competent court sent to the DPA.
According to the document, the suspect stated that he did not agree with the policies of the Fico-led government, with its judicial and media policies, as well as with the "Judas-like attitude” to the EU.
Above all, however, he wanted Slovakia's military aid to Ukraine, which was stopped by Fico, to be continued.
This is why he "decided to act”. He did not want to kill Fizzo, but rather to make him "incapacitate him from continuing his work," the document says.
At this time, it cannot be predicted if and when Fico will be able to return to his official duties. For the first time in two weeks after the attack, he was able to eat again, government representatives announced yesterday.
