The decision to allow the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) to strike targets on Russian territory with Western weapons is unlikely to radically change the situation on the battlefield, notes the American television channel CNN, citing military analysts, reports Focus.
Katerina Stepanenko, an analyst at the Washington-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW), emphasizes that many of the Russian airfields from which attacks on Ukraine are being carried out are located beyond the range of the GMLRS missiles that Kiev has received permission to use.
Therefore, according to her, US actions can "silence" Russian activity, but not limit it.
Franz-Stefan Gady of the International Institute for Strategic Studies believes that Ukraine will now be able to "strike some Russian bridgeheads, command and control centers, and supply depots. This will not stop, but will complicate Russian military operations against Kharkiv", he is confident.
"We need to be realistic about what to expect from this policy change, since the Russian army has already adapted to the introduction of high-precision ground-based weapons:", Gady added.
Mathieu Bouleg, a researcher at the Center for European Policy Analysis, argues that the policy change will allow Ukraine "to be more effective when it comes to repelling attacks and preemptive warfare".
"But this in itself does not change the rules of the game. "This is a supplement, a steroid, an additional amplifier for Ukraine's defense," the expert is confident.
