During an important visit to Sweden, the Secretary General NATO's Jens Stoltenberg expressed support for Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russia. At the press conference, together with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristerson, Stoltenberg emphasized Ukraine's right to defend itself, including striking military targets in Russia, BTA reports.
Stoltenberg announced that international law gives Ukraine the authority to attack military installations in Russia as a form of self-defense.
„The right of self-defense also includes the right to strike legitimate military targets on the territory of the attacking country, of the aggressor, in this case - of Russia,” he said, quoted by BTA.
The Kremlin has warned that Western countries supplying Ukraine with weapons risk a direct response, and President Vladimir Putin has threatened to consider arming Western adversaries in response.
Stoltenberg reiterated the position that Ukraine, a peaceful and democratic nation, was unfairly attacked by Russia. He firmly stated that Ukraine's actions to protect sovereignty are justified by international law, including strikes on Russian territory.
