Russia has announced that its forces have taken control of Staromayorske, a village in southeastern Ukraine. In this area, Ukrainian forces made some progress during their significant counteroffensive last summer, AFP and BTA reported.
The Ministry of Defense of Russia said in its daily update that the troop group "Istok" made a significant breakthrough in the enemy's defense, having successfully recaptured the settlement of Staromayorske. This village was initially captured by the Ukrainian army in July during a major counter-offensive. Although the offensive had limited success, it allowed Ukraine to regain some territory, especially in the southern regions.
Staromorsko is located in the southern part of the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine, which underlines its strategic importance.
Over the past few months, Russian forces have been increasingly active on the battlefield. President Vladimir Putin recently emphasized that Russia has managed to secure about 880 square kilometers of territory, including about 50 settlements, since the beginning of the year.
On May 10, Russian military efforts intensified in Kharkiv Oblast, resulting in the capture of several towns. However, these victories were somewhat tempered when Ukrainian reinforcements from Kiev managed to repel the advancing forces.
