The European Commission has presented a proposal to continue offering temporary protection of persons fleeing the conflict in Ukraine until March 2026. This initiative, which has been in force since 2022 and has seen multiple extensions, aims to provide refugees with basic services such as health, education and job opportunities, broadcasts BTA.

The driving force behind this proposal is Russia's ongoing assault on Ukrainian infrastructure, making it dangerous for refugees to return home. The European Commission emphasizes that the conditions that initially imposed the temporary protection continue to exist, stressing the need for its extension.

Over the past two years, the EU has opened its doors to an estimated 4.2 million Ukrainian refugees, with children making up a third of that number. This gesture of solidarity is a testament to the EU's commitment to support those affected by the conflict. The proposal is due to be discussed by the EU Council later in the week, marking a crucial step in continuing support for Ukrainian refugees amid ongoing turmoil.
