Joseph Borrell, the EU's top diplomat for foreign policy and security, suggested the European Union should review and possibly lift sanctions imposed on Kosovo last year. This recommendation comes after Kosovo has shown progress towards meeting EU conditions, according to Radio Free Europe sources, BTA reports.
The proposal is detailed in a Borrell report and has been shared with EU member states for consideration. EU ambassadors are ready to discuss this key document, which could shape the future relationship between the EU and Kosovo. The outcome of these discussions could lead to the lifting of sanctions, a topic that could also be raised at the upcoming meeting of EU foreign ministers on June 24.
Borrell's report suggests that lifting these sanctions could send a strong political message and help create a more favorable environment for continued dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina. Dialogue is crucial to normalizing relations, especially since Serbia has not recognized Kosovo's independence, declared in 2008.
At the end of June 2023, the European Union imposed punitive measures against Pristina in connection with the tensions that arose after the inauguration of Kosovo Albanian mayors in four northern municipalities in Kosovo, mostly inhabited by Serbs. The measures include - suspension of meetings of European representatives with officials from Pristina, suspension of meetings within the Stabilization and Association Process and freezing of pre-accession funds.
