The former president of the European Investment Bank (EIB) Werner Heuer is being investigated for corruption by the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO), his lawyer confirmed for DPA, quoted by BTA.

According to a press release from the EPPO, the agency is investigating cases of corruption, abuse of influence and "misappropriation of European funds".

According to the lawyer of the former top banker, the investigation centers around compensation for a former employee of the EIB, which Heuer signed.

By virtue of the usual practice, the general director of the "Human Resources" sector; and the Secretary General of the EIB discussed the termination of the contract of the employee in question, after which a memorandum of their meeting was presented to Heuer, the lawyer explains. The document terminated the employee's contract and determined the amount of compensation. Hoyer agreed with the decision.

According to the lawyer, the legal grounds for the investigation in question are "very weak". Hoyer himself, whose immunity has already been lifted so the investigation can take place, called them "completely absurd and unfounded.

Hoyer, 72, headed the EIB from 2012 until the end of 2023.
