Pyongyang fired two ballistic missiles - 1

North Korea fired two unidentified ballistic missiles, the South Korean armed forces announced today, quoted by Yonhap and BTA.

The rockets were fired from South Hwangha province. One rocket flew about 600 km, and the second - about 120 km.

The launch came after North Korea warned of retaliatory measures against a joint military exercise conducted by South Korea, the United States and Japan.

North Korea "will firmly protect the sovereignty, security and interests of the state and peace in the region through offensive and crushing countermeasures," said a statement issued by the Pyongyang-controlled state news agency KCTA.

Pyongyang regularly accuses Washington and Seoul of preparing for an attack with their military exercises, which both sides deny. In recent months, tensions on the Korean Peninsula have risen again, DPA notes.

Internationally isolated North Korea, ruled by Kim Jong-un, is subject to international sanctions over its nuclear weapons and missile program.
