New fees that Turkey collects for the passage of ships through the Bosphorus and Dardanelles come into force today, Turkish media reports.

Under the new tariff, the fee for each vessel increases from $4.42 to $5.07 per ton.

The relevant decision was taken by the Turkish Ministry of Transport. The tariff increase is pre-planned.

Transportation Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu recently clarified that the increase in the amount of the fee is based on a decree of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan dated October 7, 2022.

Turkish authorities have announced that the increase in fees for the use of the straits by foreign ships will bring the treasury at least 900 million dollars a year.

The fees that Turkey collects from ships passing through the straits are provided for in the Montreux Convention of 1936
