Israel Probes Hamas Response to Gaza Ceasefire - 1

Israel Probes Response to Proposal Including Hostage Release and Ceasefire in Gaza, the Israeli intelligence service Mossad reported, quoted by Reuters and BTA.

"The negotiators of the hostage deal delivered a response to "Hamas" on the question of the parameters of such an agreement. Israel is investigating the response and will in turn respond to the mediators," said a statement issued by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office on behalf of the Mossad.

Further details are not being disclosed.

A source in "Hamas", the radical Islamist group that rules Gaza, said that "some thoughts have been exchanged with the brother negotiators" in order to end the war, but he also did not go into details.

Mediators, including Egypt, Qatar and the United States, have been trying for months to secure a ceasefire and the release of the 120 hostages who remain captive in Gaza, but so far their efforts have been unsuccessful.

The movement "Hamas" insists that any agreement must include an end to the war and a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Palestinian enclave. Israel's position is that it will only accept a temporary truce and that it will carry out its threat to destroy "Hamas".

The Gaza war began on October 7, when Palestinian militants invaded southern Israel, killing according to Israeli figures 1,200 people and taking about 250 hostages, who they then took with them to Gaza. In response, Israel launched a military offensive that has so far killed nearly 38,000 people, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, and left the heavily urbanized Palestinian enclave in ruins.

The cease-fire plan announced at the end of May by US President Joe Biden envisages the gradual release of the hostages and the withdrawal of Israeli troops in two phases.

Among other points in it are the release of Palestinian prisoners, the restoration of Gaza and the return of the remains of the dead hostages in the third stage.

Pro-Palestinian protesters climbed onto the roof of the Australian Parliament building in Canberra, Reuters reported, citing television footage.

They show four people in dark clothes on the roof of the building. They hold up black banners, one of which reads "from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,", one of the usual chants of protest actions around the world in support of the Palestinians.
