Estonian Parliament voted on Monday for Climate Minister Kristen Michal to take over as Prime Minister with 64 votes "for" and 27 "against", writes the European edition of Politico, quoted by Focus.
Michal will succeed Kaja Kalas, who resigned as prime minister on July 15 to become the new chief diplomat of the European Union.
After her resignation, Kalas named Michal as a possible candidate to succeed her as prime minister and party chairman. Both politicians are from the Estonian centrist Reform Party.
Mihal will lead the same majority coalition as his predecessor, which consists of the Reformers, the liberal Estonia 200 party and the center-left Social Democratic Party.
At Monday's parliamentary session, Michal gave a 20-minute presentation of his government agenda, in which he justified tax increases on defense and security grounds, promised governance reforms and boosted economic growth, and defended the green transition.
