The chief psychiatrist of the Ukrainian army has been arrested for acquiring undeclared assets worth one million dollars, Agence France-Presse reported, citing a statement from the Ukrainian security service SSU, which suspects corruption.
Kiev has launched an anti-corruption campaign requested by the EU in view of Ukraine's bid to join the bloc.
In addition, the country has erupted in numerous scandals over bribes paid by civilians seeking to avoid mobilization, AFP notes.
SSU officers, with the help of the defense minister and the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, arrested the chief psychiatrist of the armed forces," the security service said in a statement. It added that the detainee was also the deputy head of the central commission that determines the fitness of candidates for military service.
On October 22, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky issued, after numerous scandals, a decree abolishing the medical commissions that determine whether men of military age are fit for military service.
Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the suspected psychiatrist has purchased 3 apartments, a house, land and 4 luxury cars. All of them were undeclared or registered in the names of his family members, the statement noted.
In addition, $152,000 and €34,000 in cash were found in the detainee's apartment.
