Earthquake Aftermath: Rescue Operations and Property Damage
Among the 27 injured are six people, including a one-month-old baby, who were rescued from under a collapsed house in the Nancy district of Tainan. A damaged bridge was reported on a highway in Zhuwei, and two people in Tainan and one person in Chiayi were rescued unharmed after being trapped in elevators during the quake.
No deaths have been reported, but rescue teams are still assessing the damage. The quake sparked a fire at a printing plant in Chiayi, which was quickly brought under control.
Taiwan and seismic activity
Taiwan is located in an area known as the Pacific Ring of Fire - an active zone with numerous seismic faults where most of the world's earthquakes occur. This makes the island vulnerable to frequent earthquakes.
