On September 5, 2009, the tourist ship "Ilinden" sank in Lake Ohrid, during which 15 Bulgarian citizens died. The reason was an accident of the steering system of the ship, built in 1920.
On July 5, 2011, the Basic Court in Ohrid found the two defendants guilty. The ship's captain, Filevski, and the Croatian citizen, Baic, who gave the vessel's fitness certificate, were each sentenced to one year in prison. The court considered that Sotir Filevski did not adhere to the shipping regulations and thoughtlessly thought that there was no danger by taking over 50 Bulgarian tourists on board the ship. Baich was also convicted for non-observance of the shipping law.
Two weeks after the tragic accident, the ship "Ilinden" was brought to the surface. The teams of the Croatian company "Dubina" for two hours they pumped the water out of it. The families of the 15 Bulgarians who died in the sinking of the ship "Ilinden" in Lake Ohrid each received 4,500 euros from insurance.
