Greece introduces new measures to tackle overtourism - 1

Greece Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has announced new measures aimed at tackling with the negative impact of overtourism against the background of the record number of tourists visiting our southern neighbor after the coronavirus pandemic, notes The Economic Times, quoted by Focus.

The government is "very concerned” from the influx of cruise ships during certain months of the year and will start charging fees, Mitsotakis explained during his annual speech at the Thessaloniki International Fair. An increase in accommodation tax is also planned, which – in the words of the Greek Prime Minister – is linked to concerns about the climate crisis.

All passengers arriving at Greek ports will pay a fee, with it expected to be higher for popular tourist islands such as Santorini and Mykonos. The accommodation tax for the period from April to October will also be increased, with the funds raised going to local municipalities.
