Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa has announced that between December and February, when the presidential elections for which he is a candidate are scheduled, the consumption of electricity will be free for households that consume less than 180 kWh per month, reported France Press, quoted by dariknews.bg.

The Ecuadorian president declared a state of emergency in five provinces

“Having strengthened public finances, we can now deal with household electricity bills in December, January and February,” President Noboa said on national television.

The statement comes in a country whose electricity sector is in crisis due to a prolonged drought, according to AFP.

According to the government, about 3.5 million Ecuadorians will benefit from the measure, which will cost the state about 34 million dollars.

The country's electricity sector has been in a state of emergency since August due to prolonged drought, minimal hydropower reserves and destroyed infrastructure.

In April, the country experienced power outages lasting up to 13 hours as the reserves of several hydroelectric plants ran low. In mid-June, a transmission line failure led to a general blackout, AFP recalls.
