Support for Ukraine ensures the survival of neighboring Moldova , German Foreign Minister Analena Berbock said, reports "Reuters", quoted by News.bg.

"Everything we do to support Ukraine also means promoting stabilization with regard to Moldova," Berbok said. "It is clear what is the biggest concern of people here: if Ukraine falls, Moldova will be the next country in line."

Berbok was visiting Chisinau for the Moldova Partnership Platform, together with his colleagues from France, Romania, Poland, the Netherlands and Lithuania.

Germany, one of Kiev's main military backers in Europe, initiated the platform after Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, framing it as part of a broader effort to stabilize Moldova's economy and protect it from Russian disinformation .

Moldova, which has a Romanian-speaking majority and a large Russian-speaking minority, has vacillated between pro-Russian and pro-Western governments since the collapse of the Soviet Union, and currently has a heavily Western-oriented administration. Moscow continues to maintain troops in a region where pro-Russian separatists broke away from Chisinau's control in a brief war in the early 1990s.

Moldova President Maya Sandu, who has accused Russia of trying to topple her government, said the country still faced serious challenges and called on partners to increase their support.

"Russia's war against Ukraine, which we have condemned from day one, has caused enormous damage to our economy," Sandu said.

"The insecurity caused by the war continues to seriously hamper our economic development and will continue to hamper it until the war is over," she added.

Within the framework of the platform, agreements were signed to provide Moldova with more than 300 million euros in the form of loans and 80 million euros in grants, the government press service announced.

Allies also welcomed Moldova's efforts to join the European Union. Under President Sandu, Moldova, which sits between Ukraine and NATO and EU member Romania, hopes to join the bloc by 2030.

France, Germany and Poland expressed their "unwavering and constant support for Moldova" in its bid to join, according to a draft resolution seen by "Reuters" after the meeting of the senior diplomats of the three countries.

The countries known as the Weimar Triangle have also pledged support for the Moldovan armed forces to defend the country, both bilaterally and as EU partners.

In May, Moldova signed a security and defense partnership with the EU, becoming the first country to reach such an agreement with the bloc.
