Croatia's Ministry of Defense has fulfilled all the prerequisites for the reintroduction of compulsory military service in early 2025 , but a political decision is still needed, which will be taken in the parliament after consultation with the prime minister and the president, Defense Minister Ivan Anushic said today in Bielovar, HINA agency reported, quoted by BTA.
He said this today in Bielovar, adding that the instructors are ready and there are three places prepared for the accommodation of conscripts, he added.
„Specifically, the potential is annually between 17,000 and 18,000 boys who turn 18 and are our future candidates for initial military training. Of course, there remains the category of conscientious objectors, and it is likely that a certain number of young men will fall into this category. Civilian military service will be organized with local government units, under similar frameworks as before 2008, when military service was suspended”, Anusic said.
In response to journalistic questions, he said that the cost of initial military training should be less than 5 million euros per year.
