Denmark said on Monday that Greenland is not for sale after Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Donald Trump's interest in acquiring the island was "no joke," Reuters reported.
Trump has previously said he would make the autonomous Danish territory part of the United States and has not ruled out using military or economic force to convince Denmark to hand it over.
On January 30, newly appointed Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Sirius XM's The Megyn Kelly Show that acquiring Greenland is in the US national interest.
"This is not about acquiring land for its own sake. This is a matter of national interest and it needs to be addressed," the US secretary of state added.
In response to Rubio's interview, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said: "I would be more surprised if he had said it was a joke."
"We seriously believe - and this applies to Greenland and Denmark - that Greenland is not for sale."
The island has about 57,000 inhabitants who manage their own internal affairs. Denmark is responsible for Greenland's defense and security and claims that only Greenlanders can decide about their future. The United States has an air base there under a treaty.
According to Rasmussen, Rubio's position is a manifestation of the "ambition of the United States to own the whole world" and "to have everything under their control."
