Argentine court issued last night arrest warrant for president of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro and members of his government on charges of crimes against humanity, reports the DPA agency, quoted by BTA.

"Argentina has issued an arrest warrant for Nicolás Maduro, Diosdado Cabello and other leaders of the Venezuelan government for crimes against humanity," announced the Argentine Forum for the Defense of Democracy, which initiated the case.

The order issued by the Federal Court in Buenos Aires states that since 2014, a systematic campaign of repression, enforced disappearances, torture, murder and persecution of the civilian population has been operating in Venezuela.

Argentine judges based their decision on the principle of universal jurisdiction, which allows the prosecution of crimes against humanity, notes DPA.

Meanwhile, Venezuela's Supreme Court also issued an arrest warrant for Argentine President Javier Millay and members of his government, accusing them of money laundering and illegal imprisonment.
