Harris is seeking to attract votes from Republican-leaning and centrist voters in swing states like Wisconsin for the Nov. 5 election. Today's event will take place in a landmark place for Republicans – an old school in Ripon, Wisconsin, where the foundations of the Republican Party were laid in 1854, according to Reuters.

Dick Cheney was the Vice President of the United States under George W. Bush. Although a lifelong Republican, he will vote for Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, his daughter Liz, a former congresswoman, announced early last month.

The two Cheneys are among the most prominent Republicans to support Harris, sharply criticizing Donald Trump's candidacy. According to them, Trump's refusal to accept the results of the 2020 election and his participation in the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, make him unfit to be president, noted Reuters.

Harris must win the support of Republicans and independents who are critical of Trump, but also retain his electorate, especially in key states such as Wisconsin, which are likely to decide the outcome of the election. According to Reuters, the current vice president has taken a center-right stance on a number of issues, including support for Israel, a crackdown on migration and an energy strategy with low fuel prices.

Recent polls show that Harris is struggling to win support among Republicans, although hundreds of GOP representatives from various institutions have publicly endorsed her, Reuters notes.

In a Sept. 20-23 Reuters/Ipsos poll, Harris led Trump 47 percent to 40 percent, but only 5 percent of Republican voters said they would vote for her.

At today's event, Harris is expected to publicly welcome Liz Cheney – a staunch conservative who opposes same-sex marriage and supports the Supreme Court's decision to overturn abortion rights – for putting country above party, Reuters points out.
