Lebanon reports Israeli attack near Roman ruins in Balbek - 1

Israel has carried out an attack on targets in Lebanon, near ancient Roman ruins, the governor of Balbek-Hermel province, Bashir Khodr, announced. According to him, the strikes were carried out at a distance of about 500 to 700 meters from the archaeological sites in Balbek, DPA reported, referring to a post on the "Ex" social network, quoted by BTA.

In his post, Hodr added a photo showing columns of smoke that appeared to have been taken immediately after the attack near the ruins of a Roman temple. The Roman ruins at Balbec, located at an altitude of about 1,000 meters, are among the most impressive sites of antiquity and a popular tourist destination.

The city and its surroundings have been included in the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List since 1984. During the time of the Roman Empire, huge temples were built in Balbec, among which the most famous are the ruins of the temples of Bacchus and Jupiter. The six preserved columns of the temples are the most recognizable landmark in Lebanon.
