„I am a big supporter of the renewal of relations with Russia”, said Robert Fitso during a meeting with deputies, quoted by News.bg.
This is not the first time Fico has clearly stated his position towards the Kremlin or the conflict in Ukraine. He recently vowed to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO, while accusing the West — in particular the US — for provoking the military conflict in the country.
Fizo has repeatedly shown his sympathy for Russia. In his words, Putin has been “unreasonably demonized” and the war started in 2014 due to the “atrocities of Ukrainian neo-Nazis”. According to Fico, there is no military solution to this conflict and ways to resolve the situation peacefully should be sought.
In January, Fico questioned Ukraine's sovereignty, saying it was under the “absolute influence of the United States”. He called on Kiev to cede territory to Russia to end the war and stressed that Slovakia would oppose Ukraine joining NATO, as such a move could trigger a third world war.
