UN Secretary-General António Guterres has urged countries at COP29 to reach an agreement on a new ambitious climate finance target. Guterres, who returned to Baku after attending the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, said that despite the desire to reach an agreement, differences between countries still exist, BTA reports.
„I feel there is a desire to reach an agreement... But differences remain“,
– António Guterres, UN Secretary-General
Call to soften hard lines
Guterres called on ministers and negotiators at the COP29 to soften their hard lines and find a way through their differences. According to him, a sharp increase in financing is key to providing the necessary resources so that all countries can implement their national climate adaptation plans and limit global warming to 1.5°C.
Financing as an investment in the future
“Financing is not handouts, but an investment against the devastation that uncontrolled climate chaos will cause for everyone“, the UN Secretary-General stressed.
According to him, reaching an agreement on climate finance is crucial not only to limit climate change, but also to protect the future of the planet.
