The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, told the MEPs in Strasbourg today that she is ready to start work immediately, hours before the European Parliament votes on the new composition of the Commissioners. Von der Leyen introduced each of the future EU commissioners who previously received a final positive assessment from the preliminary hearings, BTA reports.
Research and support for start-ups
In his speech, von der Leyen emphasized that research and science must be at the center of the European economy. She emphasizes the need for European start-ups to be able to grow more easily and efficiently in the new economic environment. In this context, she pointed out that Bulgarian European Commissioner Ekaterina Zaharieva will be responsible for these issues in the new commission.
Fight for freedom and democracy
Von der Leyen also emphasized Europe's constant struggle for freedom and democracy, noting that the struggle for freedom unites EU member states. She expressed the belief that this is the reason for the existence of the EU and emphasized the importance of the modern struggle for freedom and sovereignty, pointing to the example of Ukraine.
Change of EU Treaties
The President of the European Commission stated that the EU should work with all democratic pro-European forces in the European Parliament and listen more to citizens. She added that the time has come to change the EU treaties to adapt to the new realities and challenges of the continent.
