Syria sent an appeal to the UN Security Council and the Secretary General of the Antonio Guterres organization to stop Israel's aggression.
This was stated by the permanent representative of the country in the Qusay al-Dahaq organization.
„On behalf of the Syrian government, we have sent letters to the UN Secretary-General, calling on the UN and the Security Council to take responsibility for maintaining international peace and security and halting Israeli attacks in Syria, preventing Israel from taking advantage from the transitional period in which the country is now”, said the Syrian diplomat.
On December 8, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad left the country, and Israel immediately began actively strengthening its defenses on the Golan Heights.
The Israeli air force has attacked more than 250 military targets in Syria since the change of power in the Arab republic. The targets of the strikes were dozens of fighters of the Syrian Air Force, dozens of anti-aircraft missile systems, facilities for the production and storage of weapons and stockpiles of surface-to-surface missiles.
„This is one of the largest offensive operations in the history of the Israeli Air Force”, the Israeli military radio Haley IDF reported.
According to Netanyahu, the agreement reached after the Yom Kippur war has become invalid because the Syrian military has abandoned its positions. The Israeli prime minister emphasized that together with the head of the Ministry of Defense and with the full support of the Cabinet of Ministers, he gave the order to the military to occupy the demarcation zone and the positions that control it.
The Golan Heights were part of Syria until 1967. During the Six-Day War, the Israeli military occupied this territory, and after the Yom Kippur War (1973), the parties concluded an armistice agreement. In 1974 UN peacekeeping posts appear on the Golan Heights. The border line on the Syrian side is called "Bravo" and on the Israeli side it is the "Alpha" line.
