A ski lift collapsed in the Spanish region of Aragon on Sunday, injuring dozens of people, nine of them seriously and eight more lightly, the regional government said, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.
Around 80 people remain trapped hanging from the chairlift at the Astun ski resort in the province of Huesca, TVE reported.
"It was as if a rope had snapped, the chairs jumped and people were thrown out," an eyewitness told TVE.
The cause of the failure remains unknown.
The management of the ski resort declined to comment and it is not yet known whether there are any foreigners among the injured.
Several helicopters were working in the area to rescuing skiers who were still trapped in the chairlift and transferring the injured to nearby hospitals.
The Astún ski resort, which is popular with Spanish skiers, is located near the Spanish-French border in the Pyrenees mountain range.
