Let us be grateful to the United States for taking a leading role on the issue of Ukraine. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte told journalists today upon his arrival at the joint meeting of the ministers of defense and foreign affairs of the EU countries in Brussels, BTA reports.
“What the Americans are doing is extremely important. Until January of this year, there were no direct talks with the Russians. I am glad that President Donald Trump broke the ice and took a leadership role - I congratulate him for that“, Rutte said.
According to him, the United States is coordinating its actions with its European partners. He noted as a positive sign the fact that last night a conversation took place between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, followed immediately by Trump's talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and with European leaders.
“We will discuss today the threats facing the EU and NATO - including those from Russia, China and terrorism. We will also talk about the need to increase defense spending and for coordinated action in support of Ukraine, with the aim of achieving a ceasefire and lasting peace,“, the alliance's secretary general stressed.
