The death toll from the Texas floods has increased to 32, BTA reported. Many people remain missing, Reuters reported, citing local authorities.

So far, 32 people have been confirmed dead in the southern US state, including 14 children. The previous death toll was 27, including nine minors.

More than 850 people were rescued, some of whom managed to cling to trees.

The floods were caused by a flash storm, after which the Guadalupe River overflowed its banks in central Texas, about 87 miles northwest of the city of San Antonio.

The children who died were attending a Christian summer camp for girls on the riverbank.

Thirty-six hours after the floods, authorities have not yet said exactly how many people are missing, the Associated Press notes. It is only clear that 27 minors from the "Mystic" camp are missing.

The tragedy is reminiscent of the catastrophic flood of 1987, when 10 teenagers drowned while trying to evacuate from a church camp also on the banks of the Guadalupe River, Reuters points out.

US Secretary of Homeland Security Christie Noam meanwhile announced that President Donald Trump would fulfill the request to declare a disaster in the area to facilitate the provision of assistance.

Earlier, Trump said that his administration was working with state and local authorities to respond to the floods.
