Resignations are pouring in in Brussels! Ursula von der Leyen's top diplomatic adviser leaves her post - 1

Former Italian intelligence chief Elisabetta Belloni will leave her post as top diplomatic adviser to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in September, Politico reported.

"Ms. Belloni is leaving her post," a European Commission spokesperson said during a press briefing, adding that the EU executive had no further information to share at this stage.

The 66-year-old Belloni joined von der Leyen's cabinet in January 2025, shortly after stepping down as head of Italy's Department of Information and Security - a move that surprised many in Rome. Appointed by former Prime Minister Mario Draghi in 2021, her term at DIS was initially set to run until May 2025.

The announcement of her departure comes just as Von der Leyen is set to face a no-confidence vote in the European Parliament on Thursday.

According to Italian newspaper La Repubblica, Belloni communicated her intention to Von der Leyen first in a private meeting and then in an official letter, citing personal reasons for her departure.

Belloni will remain in her post until September to facilitate upcoming EU summits in China and Japan.
