NATO forces have sent two "Eurofighter" fighters from Germany due to the unexpected approach of a Russian reconnaissance plane over the Baltic Sea, DPA reported, citing an official representative of the German Air Force.
The fighter jets took off from "Rostock-Laage" airport to identify the Russian "Ilyushin Il-20M" plane. It flew in radio silence and remained in international airspace, a German Air Force spokesman said.
This is the 10th such alert flight over the Baltic Sea this year.
The situation in the region is becoming increasingly tense after recent espionage incidents and suspicions of sabotage, DPA notes.
