Nearly 60 first-graders in prisons in our country

Beginning of the school year in the places for those deprived of freedom

In the schools on the territory of the prisons in the country, the school year begins today for 860 students deprived of freedom. There are six schools with seven branches. There are 58 prisoners who entered the first grade this year. This was stated by the Director General of the Main Directorate “Implementation of Punishments” chief commissioner Ivaylo Yordanov, who was a guest at the opening of the 2024/2025 school year at the “Dimitar Mitev“ on the territory of the prison in the city of Lovech.

„In places of deprivation of liberty, another school year begins. This is a particularly important event for us because we have the opportunity for prisoners who do not have a primary education degree to improve their knowledge and competences. At the same time, work is being done along the line of social activity, so that we can return some better people to society, ready and with a clear awareness of compliance with the rules and legal norms, said ch. commissioner Yordanov.

The director stressed that the conditions in the schools on the territory of the places of deprivation of liberty are the same as in any Bulgarian school. In the last few years, efforts have been made to improve conditions. The most common difficulties are securing funds and finding teachers.

All 12 prisons on the territory of the country have good conditions and meet all European requirements for space, access to daylight, sanitary facilities, activities during the day for those deprived of their freedom, the chief also said. commissioner Yordanov.

The Chief Director of the State Department of Internal Affairs added that in parallel with the improvement of the conditions for those deprived of liberty, those for those working in prisons are also improving, and with the new budget it is planned to request an increase in their wages.
