The prosecutor from the Supreme Cassation Prosecutor's Office Angel Iliev, who was the only one to submit documents for head of the Sofia City Prosecutor's Office, is withdrawing from the race. NOVA learned this through sources from the prosecutor's office, but the information is also confirmed by the agenda of an upcoming meeting of the Attestation Commission of the Prosecutor's College of the Supreme Judicial Council.
Due to Iliev's withdrawal, the procedure fails and the SJC will have to open a new one.
Iliev has a long biography in the state prosecution. He was a deputy city prosecutor of Sofia. He also headed the Sofia Appellate Prosecutor's Office. He resigned from this post after a scandal related to the “SAPARD“ case. Disciplinary proceedings were also initiated against him, requested by the then Chief Prosecutor Sotir Tsatsarov. He subsequently worked in the VAP and the VKP.
The mandate of the current city prosecutor Iliana Kirilova expires this month, during which she turns 65, which means that she cannot run for a second term.
In addition to opening a new procedure for a city prosecutor, the SJC will also have to appoint an acting city prosecutor after Kirilova's mandate expires.
The Sofia City Prosecutor's Office is one of the most important structures in the state prosecution, as it is the only one that has the authority to investigate deputies, ministers and magistrates.
