Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev took part in the informal videoconference meeting of the "Foreign Affairs" Council.

This was reported by focus-news.net.

The meeting discussed current developments in diplomatic efforts to end Russian aggression in Ukraine, coordination with transatlantic partners in the context of the upcoming meeting between the US and Russian presidents in Alaska, as well as continuing the EU's solidarity and comprehensive support for Ukraine.

In his speech, Minister Georgiev welcomed the resolute commitment of US President Donald Trump to end military actions and achieve peace through negotiations. The Bulgarian first diplomat emphasized:

"Any peace agreement must be sustainable and fair, respecting the principles of international law and the foundations of the international order. Until this is achieved, our comprehensive support for Ukraine will continue. Peace is not just the absence of war, but should be the basis for long-term stability, security and prosperity for both Ukraine and Europe as a whole.“

The Bulgarian minister also pointed out that the sanctions imposed against Russia are proving their effectiveness. Their upgrading should continue until the Russian military aggression against Ukraine is stopped.

The foreign ministers of the EU member states also discussed the current situation in the Middle East and the need to accelerate the provision of humanitarian aid, which is desperately needed for the civilian population in the Gaza Strip. "Bulgaria expresses deep concern about the expansion of the military operation in the Gaza Strip. We call for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages held by "Hamas" in inhumane conditions, which would allow for the continuation of ceasefire efforts. Humanitarian aid intended for the residents of the Gaza Strip, who are in a critical condition, should be increased immediately.“ - stated the Bulgarian Foreign Minister. In addition, Minister Georgiev reaffirmed Bulgaria's readiness, together with its EU partners, to continue to make intensive and targeted efforts for a lasting solution to the conflict in the Middle East based on the two-state principle.
