Today from 14:00 to 20:00, the movement of heavy trucks over 12 tons on the "Trakia", "Hemus" and "Struma" highways will be restricted, only in the direction of Sofia, the press center of the "Road Infrastructure" Agency (API) announced.
There will be no restrictions on the passage of motor vehicles (MPVs) over 12 tons from Sofia in the direction of Burgas on "Trakia", on the "Hemus" highway - from Sofia at 0 to 87 kilometers, at the roundabout with road I-4, as well as on the "Struma" highway from Sofia in the direction of Blagoevgrad.
The travel restriction does not apply to vehicles carrying out public passenger transport. On the "Hemus" and "Struma" highways, the ban does not cover vehicles over 12 tons that carry out transport of dangerous goods (ADR), live animals, perishable food products and temperature-controlled cargo and specialized carcass trucks. On the "Trakia" highway in the section from the "Ihtiman" road junction (PV) (at 34 kilometers) to the "Vakarel" (at 23 kilometers) in the direction of Sofia, the ban will not apply to vehicles over 12 tons carrying dangerous goods.
The change is necessary in order to optimize traffic at the end of the holidays and in view of the increased traffic to the capital on the three highways and the weak traffic from Sofia to the interior of the country.
At the discretion of the drivers during the change in the traffic organization for the weekends, other republican roads can be used as bypass routes, while respecting the permanent traffic organization in force for them, the RIA indicated. The introduction of the measure has been coordinated with the Ministry of Interior, and at their discretion, additional actions may be taken to facilitate traffic and increase the permeability of vehicles.
As of yesterday, the new rules in the Road Traffic Act, affecting drivers of motor vehicles, electric vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, have come into force. The changes were voted on by parliament and promulgated in the State Gazette on August 5, 2025.
