North Korea has likely received technical assistance from Russia for the development of submarines. This was stated by South Korean Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-baek, quoted by “Reuters“, reports News.bg.

The DPRK has expressed its intention to develop submarines capable of launching ballistic missiles. So far, the country has conducted tests of such missiles from submerged platforms, but it remains unclear whether Pyongyang has managed to master the technology for launching from submarines themselves. North Korea is also pursuing the development of nuclear submarines.

During a hearing at the South Korean parliament's defense committee, Ahn Gyu-baek said Pyongyang is likely receiving various technologies to support the development of its submarine fleet.

The minister noted that it was still premature to conclude whether North Korea had actually conducted a submarine-launched ballistic missile test.

Over the past two years, North Korea and Russia have significantly stepped up their military cooperation. According to South Korean intelligence, Pyongyang has sent more than 10,000 soldiers to participate in the war against Ukraine in exchange for economic and military-technological assistance.
