Most Americans - including 80% of Democrats and 41% of Republicans - believe the US should recognize a Palestinian state, a Reuters/Ipsos poll showed. That means President Donald Trump's decision to oppose such a move is at odds with public opinion, BTA reports.

The poll, conducted over six days and ending on Monday, found that 59% of respondents supported recognizing Palestine, while 33% opposed it and the rest were unsure or did not answer. Among Republicans, opinion is more divided: 53% oppose and 41% support recognition.

In recent weeks, a number of countries - including Britain, Canada, France and Australia - have officially recognized Palestine, leading to criticism from Israel. The Israeli bombing of the Gaza Strip, triggered by Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, devastated large parts of Palestinian villages.

About 60% of respondents believe that Israel's response in Gaza has been excessive, while 32% disagree.

Trump, who returned to the White House in January, supports Israel's military actions and has tried to broker a ceasefire, hoping for a lasting peace. The survey found that 51% believe Trump will make a significant contribution if his efforts work, while 42% disagree.

While only one in twenty Democrats approve of his overall performance, one in four say his contribution should be recognized if peace is to last.

However, success remains uncertain after fresh violence erupted over the weekend, threatening a week-long truce. Key issues remain unresolved, including the disarmament of Hamas, the withdrawal of Israeli troops and the future governance of the Palestinian enclave.

Trump's foreign policy approval rating rose to 38%, up from 33% earlier this month, the highest rating since July.
