Two Hungarian citizens have been arrested in the area of the city of Tuzla, northeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina, on suspicion of espionage, reports the Bosnian publication Dnevni Avaz, reports News.bg.
According to local authorities, the detention took place on October 22, after a report from citizens about the suspicious behavior of two people. The police in the Tuzla Canton reacted immediately, and the case was transferred to the State Investigation and Protection Agency (SIPA).
The agency's spokeswoman Jelena Miovčić confirmed to Avaz that SIPA is conducting checks on the case:
"The Ministry of Interior of the Tuzla Canton is working on the matter. We have been notified and are taking action. If it is established that there are elements indicating a crime under the Criminal Code of Bosnia and Herzegovina, we will actively participate in the investigation."
According to unofficial information disseminated by Avaz, the detainees are likely employees of the Hungarian counterintelligence services. Their names have not been officially announced, but local media indicate that they are men aged 63 and 73 who entered the country on October 20.
After interrogation, the two were handed over to the Foreigners' Service of Bosnia and Herzegovina while the investigation continues.
Bosnian authorities specify that no formal charges have been filed at this stage, but the case is being closely monitored by the national security services.
