The president of the Valencia region, Carlos Mazon, has resigned over the way his administration handled the catastrophic floods that hit the region a year ago, reports „Reuters“, reports News.bg.

„I can't go on any longer“, Mazon told reporters after a speech in which he sharply criticized the national government's response to the crisis.

He did not specify whether early elections would be called, nor whether he was also giving up his seat in the regional assembly, which would end his parliamentary immunity, nor who his temporary replacement would be.

As a reminder, a year ago, torrential rains caused widespread flooding in Spain, in which 229 people died, and damage is estimated at billions of euros, mainly in the suburbs south of Valencia.

Residents of the affected areas accuse the regional government of issuing a warning about the disaster too late.
