Ukraine will introduce a system of fixed-term military service in addition to the existing system of conscription in the Ukrainian armed forces amid a severe shortage of recruits, The New York Times reported.
The existing system of permanent contracts has caused serious concerns among Ukrainians, because, as the newspaper notes, “it is a one-way ticket to the front“. The new system provides for contracts for a period of up to five years.
However, this innovation not only does not replace mobilization, but also allows for the re-calling of contract soldiers after a one-year postponement.
