The administration of US President Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit against California authorities over the recent redistricting approved by state residents, Reuters reported, citing court documents, BTA reported.
The redistricting could give the Democratic-ruled state five more seats in the US House of Representatives. In this way, Democrats are countering Republican efforts to secure five more Texas seats in the legislature.
The Department of Justice joined as a plaintiff in the lawsuit, which was filed on November 5 by the local California organization of the Republican Party and 19 registered voters from that state.
The case challenges the so-called Proposition 50, which was approved by a vote of California residents last week with nearly 64% of the vote.
US Attorney General Pam Bondi published a statement on the social network "Ex" yesterday, in which she accused California Governor - Democrat Gavin Newsom - of "seizing power through the shameless Proposition 50 redistricting".
