A man was executed in the Iranian city of Semnan for deliberately strangling his wife, DPA reported, BTA reported.
The Mizan news agency, which is affiliated with the country's judiciary, reported today that the incident took place in Semnan in 2020, and the execution was carried out after the verdict was confirmed by the Supreme Court.
Investigators later revealed that the husband had tried to make the woman's death appear natural. Authorities said his attempts failed.
Public executions are rare in Iran. They are usually executed by hanging.
Iran's widespread use of the death penalty has been criticized for years by human rights activists, who accuse the Iranian judiciary of using executions to silence critical voices.
In late September, “Amnesty International“ announced that more than 1,000 executions had been carried out in the country this year - more than any other country in the past 15 years.
