In the UK, thousands of people gathered outside an army training center in East Sussex to protest against the government's decision to house 540 asylum seekers there.

Local residents marched to the Crowborough military training center for the 12th consecutive weekend. They waved Union Jacks and chanted "We want Labour to go away" as the first migrants were being accommodated.

The protest came a day after Sussex Police said three protesters had been arrested for "aggressive" behavior. Police said no arrests were made at the latest protest on Sunday, which drew about 1,800 people.

The march was in response to plans by the Home Office to use the military camp in Crowborough as part of a wider strategy to stop asylum seekers being accommodated in hotels. A volunteer group called "Crowborough Shield", which describes itself as non-political, said it was taking legal action against the government's announcement, which "threatens" town.

The Home Office said the former training ground, which is a mile from the centre of Crowborough, had previously been used to house Afghan families evacuated during the 2021 withdrawal from Kabul.

400 hotels were used to house asylum seekers under the last government, at a cost of £9m a day, with almost half of them still being used for this purpose.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said she "understands the strength of local feelings but also believes it is absolutely essential that the accommodation of migrants in hotels ends".
