The Federal Security Service of Russia (FSB) has determined that the online platform "Telegram" used by millions of people in the country poses a security risk, DPA reported, BTA reported.

According to the FSB, there is reliable information that the armed forces and intelligence services of Ukraine can extract information from the messaging application in a very short time and use it for military purposes.

The FSB's accusations again increase fears in Russia that the extremely popular social network could soon be blocked in the country, although for many Russians "Telegram" is the main tool through which they gain unhindered access to information.

The Russian authorities developed the "Max" application with the idea that it would replace platforms such as "Telegram", "WhatsApp" and others. However, critics say the app, developed by Russian authorities, is a surveillance tool that feeds users censored content and propaganda.

Russian telecommunications regulator Roskomnadzor has accused "Telegram" of failing to comply with Russian laws and regulatory recommendations by failing to remove banned content. Authorities in Moscow also say the platform is not taking enough measures against fraudsters who abuse the app for criminal purposes.

Roskomnadzor also said that "Telegram" must ensure that servers processing Russian users' data are located in the country, not abroad.

The company has repeatedly denied the allegations against it.
