President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Wednesday that Ukraine would continue to increase the range of its strikes against Russia after announcing a successful attack on a target at a distance of more than 1,500 km, Reuters quoted him as saying.
In a post on X, he reported that the Ukrainian security service had carried out a strike deep into Russian territory, which he described as "a new stage in the use of Ukrainian weapons to limit Russia's war potential." Zelensky posted a video of rising smoke, without specifying the specific target.
"The distance in a straight line is more than 1,500 kilometers. We will continue to expand these ranges," he added.
The SBU later said its drones had struck a Russian oil-transfer station near the city of Perm overnight, about 1,500 km from Ukraine.
In recent weeks, Kiev has stepped up attacks on targets in Russia, including oil refineries, warehouses and ports. Ukraine is seeking to weaken a key source of funding for Moscow's military campaign. The strikes come as global oil prices have risen due to the war with Iran.
On Tuesday, a Ukrainian drone caused a major fire at a Russian oil refinery in the Black Sea port of Tuapse. It was the third attack on the site in less than two weeks.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said the attacks were evidence of increased Ukrainian attacks on civilian targets.
The Ukrainian Defense Ministry said that since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022, the country had increased the range of its strikes against Russia by 170%.
Kiev has also amassed a stockpile of locally produced long-range weapons. In February, Ukrainian drones struck a refinery in Ukhta, in Russia's Komi region, about 1,750 km from the Ukrainian border, according to regional authorities.
"It is important that every strike reduces the capabilities of Russia's military industry, logistics and oil exports," Zelensky added.
