The Greek parliament has rejected the vote of no confidence submitted by the opposition against the government of the ruling center-right New Democracy party headed by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, BTA reported.

The demand to oust the cabinet was put to a vote after three days of deliberations that began on Tuesday. It was submitted by the parliamentary group of the opposition socialist party PASOK on the grounds that, according to the socialists, the government manipulated evidence related to the biggest train accident in the history of Greece, which occurred on the night of March 1, 2023 in the Tempe Pass near Larissa, at which killed 57 people. The motion of no confidence, which was tabled by PASOK chairman Nikos Androulakis, was supported by 141 MPs, including those of the largest opposition party in parliament, the left-wing SYRIZA, but they fell short of the vote to pass in it was ultimately rejected by 159 votes.

The ruling party "New Democracy" has a majority of 158 deputies in the 300-seat parliament, which is why the outcome of the vote was a foregone conclusion. The opposition had no illusions that it would be able to topple the government, but believed that the debates could influence the mood of Greek voters ahead of the upcoming European Parliament elections in June.
