The highway from Thessaloniki to Kulata is closed due to the many number of fires raging in northern Greece.

At the moment there is no information for how long it will remain blocked.

Traffic was diverted through surrounding villages, and a kilometer-long traffic jam was formed in the area, reported a BNR reporter.

Police on the spot took up the organization of the traffic on the extremely hot Saturday day.

The highway is used by many Bulgarians who go to the beach at the weekend, and many cars with Bulgarian registration can now be seen in the queues.

Traffic is extremely intense and in the villages there are literally kilometers long queues of cars, most often with Greek, Bulgarian and Romanian registration. The movement is extremely slow through the villages, which have not particularly good roads.

Greek authorities are urging anyone traveling to Thessaloniki to choose an alternative route as it is not known when the road will be reopened. The diversion is to the villages of Evangelistria, Kefalochori and Kalokastro. At 16:00 the temperature is 41 degrees. In many places, plugs have even formed. Because of the heat, many vehicles have broken down on the road.
