American President Joe Biden will explain today in an address to the nation from the White House the reasons for the decision to withdraw from the presidential race in the United States a little more than three months before the elections are held on November 5, reported DPA, quoted by BTA.
This will be Biden's first speech addressed to his countrymen since he announced on social networks on Sunday the end of his candidacy for a second term and passed the baton to his vice president, Kamala Harris, the agency notes.
Since last week, Biden has refrained from public appearances after being diagnosed with COVID-19 and isolated at his home in the state of Delaware. He called his campaign headquarters on Monday to urge campaign staffers and volunteers to give "all their heart and soul" for Harris.
In the four-minute phone call, Biden said that although he will not participate in the election, he will remain "totally committed" in the last six months of his presidential term. The head of state returned to Washington last night after testing negative for the coronavirus.
He is scheduled to deliver his speech to the nation at 8:00 p.m. local time (3:00 a.m. Bulgarian time). His withdrawal created chaos in the election campaign, but on the other hand it gave the US Democratic Party a chance to change its messages in the battle with the Republican challenger – former President Donald Trump, who is seeking to return to the White House after four years.
In his address, Biden is expected to highlight his achievements over the past three and a half years, outline his arguments for why Harris should be elected president and warn of the dangers of a second Trump term, DPA said.
